Maximos of Ephesus

Maximos of Ephesus
Fourth-century Neoplatonist (q.v.) philosopher who followed the teaching of Iamblichos (q.v.). He became a mentor to Julian (q.v.), despite his many critics who claimed he was a charlatan who faked miraculous-looking tricks. Mazimos's access to Julian allowed him to amass a personal fortune, much of which he lost after Julian's death in 363.
